RR Donnelley (RRD) is a global, integrated communications provider focussed on multichannel marketing and business communications. RRD have over 13 offices spread across the UK, with much of the business being focussed on marketing and business support services as well as outsourced customer management. In 2015, following a decision by Hibu Plc to cease the physical printing of the Yellow Pages, it was decided that an RRD facility in Flaxby, North Yorkshire was to close, affecting over 220 employees on site. Working in partnership with both RRD and The Printing Charity, Renovo implemented an extensive programme of support for affected staff.
As a traditional and longstanding print facility, many of the employees affected had been with RRD for a number of years, with very limited experience of the external job market and with skills that were becoming less in demand within a sector that was changing rapidly. Many of the employees came from skilled and semi-skilled roles and needed to think carefully about identifying roles outside of the print sector as they left the business. As an active print facility, support also needed to be built carefully around shift patterns, ensuring that the operational running of the facility was not interrupted.
As part of an innovative partnership with The Printing Charity, Renovo created a bespoke range of workshops, adapted across all levels across the facility, built around shift patterns and implemented over a 6 week timeframe. The Workshops covered all aspects of job search including CV production, effective online job searching and interviews. The Workshops were complemented by the provision of a series of 1-2-1 follow ups or ‘Career Clinics’ to put into practice some of the knowledge built during the workshop programme. After the closure of the facility, employees were further supported with access to a wealth of on demand, online career resources as well as 24/7 emotional and wellbeing support.
